UK calls for halt to shale drilling

Labour party demands safety tests be conducted

The UK’s opposition Labour party has called for a halt to domestic shale-gas drilling until safety tests have been conducted. Cuadrilla Resources is exploring in Lancashire, in northwest England. It believes there are shale-gas reserves in the Bowland formation, which runs from Clitheroe to Blackpool.

Huw Irranca-Davies, the UK’s shadow energy minister, has asked the government to temporarily halt drilling until a parliamentary inquiry is completed.
