          UK oil and gas drilling activity plummets

          DRILLING activity in the UK portion of the North Sea plummeted in 2009, with only 78 exploration and appraisal wells spudded – the lowest level in five years and a 35% drop compared with 2008.

          Exploration wells almost halved in 2009 compared with the previous year, according to a study by Deloitte, an accountancy firm. On the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) the greatest decrease in activity came in the northern North Sea, where well spuds were down by 65% compared with 2008. The southern UKCS area also suffered, with a 60% drop. Activity was also down in the central North Sea (down by 47%) and the Moray Firth (a 26% drop in new spuds).
