Iraq prepares for January election
Iraq's national election, which will probably take place on 23 January, is critical for a number of reasons, writes James Gavin
 For the US, Iraq's upcoming election holds the promise of political stability, which would enable it to wind down its military presence in the country. President Barack Obama has described the vote as an important milestone, as the Iraqi people continue to take responsibility for their future. For Iraqis, the election is even more significant: it offers a chance to make progress with important pieces of legislation, delayed for years by political logjam. These include the petroleum law, which seeks to set a framework for foreign investment in Iraqi hydrocarbons, while establishing a mechanism for sharing revenues and managing oil contracts between the Arab two-thirds of the country and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan province.
