Petrobras prepares to beat the pre-salt
Petrobras is showcasing an array of subsea technologies, hoping to reassure investors that it can meet the operational hurdles presented by Brazil's pre-salt resources, writes Conal Walsh
 BRAZIL's offshore pre-salt area, widely tipped to rival the North Sea in terms of size and importance, has been generating excitement in the energy world since it was discovered in 2007. But there are concerns that Petrobras, Brazil's publicly traded, but state-controlled oil company, will face difficulties coping on its own with the task of developing the reserves, trapped offshore under several kilometres of sea water, rock and a layer of hard-to-penetrate salt. "Having a single operator is not good," says Joao Carlos de Luca, head of the Brazilian Petroleum Institute. "Other companies would bring more technology. Nobody has a monopoly on knowledge."
