Nigeria: Brass LNG back on the rails
TOTAL joined the group planning to construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex at Brass, on the southern part of the Niger delta, last month putting the project back on track for start-up in 2011. The firm said it had acquired the 17% formerly held by Chevron, which decided earlier this year to withdraw from the project. Go-ahead for the first two trains, with a capacity of 5.0m tonnes a year (t/y) each, is expected by year-end, Total said. Total also takes over Chevron's gas supply commitment for the facility, saying it will account for a third of the supply, or 5.89bn cubic metres a year (cm/y), for at least 20 years. It will source the gas from its onshore fields, "offshore clusters under development" and from the OML 112 and 117 licences, where it acquired 40% interests recently.
