There are many operational technology (OT), information technology (IT) systems and protocols available, but turning digital potential into digital reality is hampered by diverse legacy systems and communication protocols. ABB Ability EdgeInsight helps customers bridge the gap between OT and IT by collecting data from field devices/gateways/PLCs in OT systems, converting field protocols into one common protocol and delivering the standardised output to the IT infrastructure, while guaranteeing no access to the field network.

Data is shared beyond individual sites efficiently and securely. Its open architecture gives users maximum flexibility as there are no proprietary lock-ins; they own their data so they can use it as needed. It underpins all digital investment by ensuring efficient data extraction from the supporting device/system protocols. ABB is currently focused on process performance (increasing customer production, lowering environmental footprint) and condition monitoring (predicting maintenance instead of schedule-based maintenance), specifically for rotating machinery and electrical equipment, found at every oil and gas installation.

Using ABB Ability EdgeInsight for data collection and ABB’s wider Insight portfolio for dashboards and analytics, 830 of 915 hours of offshore work was moved to onshore and 30 hours eliminated, improving safety and cost. In another project, days of analysis was reduced to minutes, achieving a 10pc increased drive power rating and forecast annual savings of 9460 MWh and 160t CO2. Without it, in a voltage dip, the client had to manually gather event data and send it off for analysis. Instant automatic analysis with precalculated KPIs enables faster decision-making. Previously, compressor tests were annual and if decreased performance was seen, further analysis required shutdown. With continual assessment, issues are now spotted earlier meaning less likelihood of shutdowns.
