Shell ups its China shale-gas hunt

Damon Evans, SINGAPORE: Shell has reiterated its bullish position on China’s shale-gas potential, as it plans to ramp up drilling for the unconventional resource in the country – the world’s biggest energy consumer.

Together with its state-run joint-venture partner, CNPC, the supermajor ploughed more than $400 million into Chinese shale-gas projects last year, drilling 15 wells. The partners plan to drill 20-25 wells this year.

The wells yielded some of the best results seen in China, coupled with some disappointments, but the overall outcome has been better than expected, Shell’s chief financial officer, Simon Henry, said.
